My zine ‘Words from a Wardrobe’ uses poetry and short stories to tell tales that have stemmed from ideas around the clothing found in wardrobes. Whether that be how the clothes came to be, an experience they have gone through, or clothing based imagery becomes an analogy to tell a deeper story, I was fascinated by the significance and secrets that are overlooked inside our wardrobes.

The intention of this essay is that we can get a better understanding of how children make the connection between text and image to imagine their own narrative. Furthermore, drawing together concepts from picture-book theory and narrative theory will expand upon this understanding.
Whilst picture books may not be considered complex literature (University of Kent, 2013), the relationship between the image and simple prose is a dynamic force in sharing narrative information. The ‘enhancing interaction’ of literature and art, means that the image provides ‘more in-depth explanations than the words.’ They interact to present a full picture (Lyn, 2012). Sometimes however, the interactions work in a more ambiguous way. The French have a word to describe the pleasure of observing disparities between word and image (Blake, 2000): déclage – ‘the way that two things don’t fit together.’
